Public trust, integrity and high standards are fundamental to a successful business, essential to the flourishing of free enterprise, and key to the primary function of the Better Business Bureau. When business scandals erupt, a climate of scepticism and cynicism develops. The entire business community can end up tainted from the actions of a few. The BBB's role in highlighting the value of good business practices, the power of voluntary self-regulation, and the need for consumer trust and confidence in the marketplace is more crucial than ever before.
Whenever a consumer, business or organization considers whether to buy, invest or donate, BBBs can add value to that decision-making process. As more buying decisions are made without personal contact, over the telephone or via the Internet, our BBB experience and knowledge plays a particularly crucial role. A record number of businesses now proudly display the BBB trust mark in their storefront and online locations. Consumers recognize the value of the Better Business Bureau name; they know it signifies that the business has met and must continue to meet specific standards to maintain our approval. Our advertising review programs at the national and local level are fostering renewed faith in the trust and accuracy of advertising claims. As cross-border commerce increases, our system is assisting consumers in other countries who have disputes with Canadian-based businesses, and the Canadian Council is forging strategic alliances with world-wide organizations in support of safe, global e-commerce.
These examples detail the many ways the BBB system strengthens the bond of trust and ethical dealing between businesses and consumers.
As the Better Business Bureau of South Central Ontario enters its 70th year of service, we applaud the many businesses that support our programs to uphold high standards of business conduct. The directors who serve on our Board of Directors are to be commended for guiding us in meeting the challenges confronting our marketplace. Finally, I extend my gratitude to the BBB employees for their expertise and unshaken commitment to fostering a marketplace that serves the best interests of businesses, consumers, organizations and charities.
Sincerely,
THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU OF SOUTH CENTRAL ONTARIO
